Independent Bookstore Day

Inklings Bookshop in Yakima, WA

Today is Independent Bookstore Day!

To celebrate, I’m featuring a delightful store we visited last summer (July 2022) on our first road trip emerging from COVID-19 lockdown. Because it had been so long since we could travel anyplace to visit a bookstore, we made it a priority to look for some on this trip.

And I was so excited to find this one:

When we walked through the door, we were greeted by so much bookish good stuff, like the month’s featured display of Where’s Waldo?

A 3-level round display featuring many "Where's Waldo?" books. On the top level sits a Waldo doll: A male figure with eyeglasses, wearing a red and while horizontal striped shirt and blue jeans.

I especially liked the way the store presents the origin of its name.

A wooden display nook labeled Inklings, with small decorative lights along the top and the 2 sides. Along the bottom edge is a hand-lettered quotation: "You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me" by C.S. Lewis. Inside the display is a hand-lettered sign explaining the origin of the Inklings as a writing and discussion club consisting of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, George MacDonald, Dorothy Sayers, G.K. Chesterton, Charles Williams, and others.

I also enjoyed seeing the shelf quotations throughout the store.

I haven’t gotten into Book Tok, but Inklings has.

A display that says Book Tok: The Most Popular Book Tok titles at Inklings!

And of course every reader knows that a good mug of coffee or tea necessarily accompanies any good book. You’d be hard pressed NOT to find one you like here.

Background: bookshelves. Foreground: a 3-level round display featuring lots of mugs with book-related quotations.

There’s so much to love in this store, and I got a good start on my winter holiday shopping. If you’re ever in Yakima, Washington, be sure to stop by.
