Introductory Notes
Joan Didion, author of fiction, nonfiction, and screenplays, is known primarily as an incisive essayist on politics and culture, particularly popular culture and the media. Along with Norman Mailer, Tom Wolfe, Truman Capote, and Gore Vidal she was a force behind the rise of New Journalism.
Her work has been published in various periodicals, including Saturday Evening Post, Esquire, Vogue, American Scholar, Mademoiselle, National Review, Holiday, The New York Times Magazine, and The New York Times Book Review.
